According to TennesseeLakeInfo.com (see link below): "The construction of the Watauga Lake Project incurred 10,274,559 man hours of labor. During the construction 1 man lost his life, and 48 suffered injuries. The project relocated 761 families and caused the removal of 1,281 grave sites. Some of the materials used to build the dam are 80400 cubic yards of concrete, and 65,400 cubic yards of grouting for the foundation." |
The lake warms to a very comfortable swimming temperature by mid-summer and the Triathlon's website (see link below) estimates that the temperature is still between 70° and 75° by the weekend of the Triathlon event. The lake is promoted as the "third cleanest lake in America" making it a great venue for a swimming event. |
The Watauga Lake area is quite beautiful in the Fall and, at the time of this Triathlon event, displays the beginnings of its Fall color. Warm clean water, cool air and Fall foliage make this an outstanding setting for this athletic event. Links to references in this article and to sites related to the Watauga Lake Triathlon: |
