Competitors began the swim near the church as the fog lifted from the Blue Ridge mountains. Swimmers left the shore in age and gender groups followed by those participating in teams.

The triangular swim course was 1000 meters long with water temperatures between 70 ° and 75 °. Competitors were allowed to wear but not required to wear wetsuits. |
The 22 mile bike course included some challenging hills with breathtaking views and a stretch that followed the Roan Creek. The area's Fall colors were emerging just in time for this event.
|
Finally, the competitors left the Church area for the 5-mile run down Sugar Grove Church Road and Dry Hill Road then turning back at the Cowanstown bridge. At this point bikers and runners were passing and cheering each other on.
