Overmountain Weavers' Guild
And by the time you left you understood what happens between animal or plant (sheep, alpaca, cotton, etc.) and the beautiful garments the exhibitors sell at this show. Shearing, dyeing, spinning, weaving and designing and constructing the final product are involved processes clearly performed with care and artistry.
Arlene Angelmaier, the Guild's chairperson for this show, has assembled the full range of exhibitors from those who maintain ranches for the animals that provide the wool (Alpacas and Llamas of Church Hill, TN) to weavers such as Sherilyn Twork and Ellen Turpening (both of Kingsport TN) to the creator of many books and kits for knitters (Andras Knight-Bowman) to suppliers of yarn (A Novel Yarn of Jonesborough and Royal Fibercraft.)
The yarns used range from thick, highly textured yarns to yarn not much thicker than thread. The patterns range from traditional weaving patterns to modern patterns to fit with current fashion trends.

It is always rewarding to spend time with people who are devoted to and skilled at their work. That the end product is so beautiful makes a visit to one of the Overmountain Weavers' Guild shows down-right fun. The guild was established in 1972. They meet at Exchange Place in Kingsport, TN on the third Wednesday of each month beginning at 10:00 AM and usually meet on the first Saturday of each month at Exchange Place at 10:00 AM in what they call "Boot Camp". Their website (see link below) offers a calendar of their upcoming events. ![]() |
The Guild participates in several shows and demonstrations throughout the year and also offers classes. For more information visit their website at www.omwg.net or call 423-323-2569.
