June 2010

For years it has been quoted that Watauga Lake is the "third cleanest lake in America." The origin of this quote seems a bit hazy these days and is used generally to mean that we have a very clean lake for recreation use.

However, regardless of the lake's national ranking, the "First Annual" Watauga Lake Clean Up was clearly designed to show the local residents' intentions to maintain this lake's deserved reputation for its cleanliness.

According to organizer Mary Salter "We had a successful event. We collected around 500 bags of trash (and) could easily have collected more but ran out of trash bags. I feel the event was a success."

Clearly this event was a success and a great starting point for future clean ups. The day ended with a celebration for the participants which included food, music and prizes.
