"Summer is officially here and there is hardly a more essential summertime activity than an afternoon on the lake watching or participating in a boat parade.
" For six years, Tommy Cowan has worked to organize the annual boat parade that takes place on Watauga Lake each July 4. The parade is accompanied by a fireworks display later in the evening at the Captain's Table Restaurant.

Boat owners prepare to make the long journey to the Watauga Dam for the 2:00 parade. From the far end of the lake near the North Carolina border, the trip is 16 miles and can take over an hour for a pontoon boat.

Before the 2:00 parade, many local residents and visitors eat at one of the local diners or general stores. This resident chose the Dry Hill General Store and its special on the 4th... baked beans, corn bread and cole slaw. Lunch is also served at the Cove Ridge Marina Grill, Mallard Cove Marina, The Butler General Store and the Butler Grill.
