The Biltmore Winery

The Biltmore wine business got off to a shaky start. According to "Lady on the Hill" by Howard E. Covington, Jr. (see Resources) its first winemaker was one of the estate's handymen and even William Cecil declared that the first wines were in bottles with pretty labels but were undrinkable.

The first wines were produced in the lower level of the conservatory with an experimental production techniques. The early efforts were poor and as William Cecil expanded the number of grapevines on the estate he also began the search for an experienced winemaker and a better facility.
